In December 2019, Dominique Jabey Gaines presented The Black Market — The Adverts and The Arts Within The Inner City Neighborhoods.
Oba Jackson and Joshua Ruggeri (JRUGGS) each had a piece on display in the exhibit. The exhibit was curated by JaQuanne LeRoy.
NOTES: Dominique J. Gaines is a self-taught artist who has recently found a passion for oil painting. With a multidisciplinary skill set, Dominique positions his work as a narrative of the African-American diaspora — particularly from an elder black millennial perspective. Committed to being a life-long learner, Dom wishes to create works that educate and inspire. Gaines’ first collection of works explores the exclamation of black and brown stereotypes in advertising while reflecting on cultural standards of excellence. The work addresses a range of topics — from the depicted subservience of African Americans in advertisements in the early 20th century to the more recent use of African Americans in ads to sell to the “Black Market”.
Reception was Friday, December 6, 2019, 5-9pm.
